Why do it right?
Its tempting to install your appliance yourself, and sure a microwave, toaster or kettle you just plug it in and your good to go. However a major appliance that requires plumbing may not be so simple and here’s why…
The first and most often forgotten point to mention is damage, to the appliance in transit or during the install, and also the potential damage that could be done to your home, apartment, property or business. Appliances are often damaged in transit, as the customer tries to get the appliance back to their premises. Appliances are often damaged in the install process as well, by an accidental screw driver or spanner scratching the paint or stainless steel finish. Damage done to the home (floor boards, walls and ceilings) is also common during the install process, particularly when the weight of the appliance is underestimated, or the correct tools are not used.
If the appliance is not installed correctly and an error, malfunction or breakdown occurs where the faulty installation may have in anyway contributed then the manufacture will not honour their guarantee and your warranty will be voided.
Some Strata agreements require that some plumbed appliances are professionally installed through a licensed plumber. Doing it yourself may cause some serious issues with your Strata Board. So check with your Strata managers before going ahead yourself.
Do you know where your house wiring is, and how mains power works, are you familiar with your fuse system? What happens if the appliance leaks or malfunctions? What safety hazards could this expose? Is it a high pressure system that is potentially dangerous. Is there an explosion risk. What about corrosion and structural damage.
Furthermore, some installs may require use of chemicals such as industrial strength solvents or cleaners, or require welding, these may expose you to dangerous fumes or gases.
Or it could be as simple as lifting a heavy appliance and hurting your back.
When a licensed plumber installs your appliances these are just some of the considerations they take into account to ensure that the device operates safely, and that you aren’t exposed to any risks during installation.
Did you know that you should not lay a refrigerator down on its side (or upside down)? Did you know that your washing machine needs to be accurately levelled? Which then begs the question how where we supposed to know that, is it common knowledge, or common sense or did we just miss the memo. Some trade secrets are just simple little things like this, but if you don’t know what your doing you may mess something up.
How do you know that you have installed your appliance correctly and that it is operating properly? Is the housing correctly tensioned or fastened. Have you over or under tightened the nuts and bolts. Are all the joints and mating points correctly sealed.
An install plumber will test that the device is working properly before they leave, so you can have piece of mind.
